Authorised Airlines

Person with luggageThe UK Overseas Territories do not operate an airline blacklist system such as that used by the European Union. However, in common with most countries, there are restrictions on which airlines or air charter companies (collectively called air operators) may operate into, out of or within the Overseas Territories.

It is a good idea to check that the air operator you intend to fly with has suitable permissions. The fact that an operator has the necessary permission is your guarantee that either:

  • the operator is audited and certificated by a United Kingdom (UK) or Overseas Territory aviation authority; or
  • the operator is audited and certificated by a reputable foreign authority, and has provided proof of insurance cover, the airworthiness of its aircraft etc to the UK or Territory authorities

The standards we apply are the international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

In general, those permitted to operate are:

1.  Any air operator certificated by Air Safety Support International (ASSI) or an Overseas Territory aviation authority. These will be operators actually based within one of the Overseas Territories.

Included in this category are:

  • Anguilla Air Services
  • Air Turks and Caicos
  • Cayman Airways
  • Cayman Express
  • Global Airways (Turks and Caicos Islands)
  • Falkland Islands Government Air Service
  • Long Tail Aviation (Bermuda)
  • Montserrat Airways
  • Trans Anguilla Airways
  • VI Airlink

2.  Any UK based operator, certificated by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

Currently, the only UK operators flying to the Overseas Territories are:

  • British Airways

3.  A foreign operator (that is one not based in the UK or an Overseas Territory) which holds specific permission from the UK Secretary of State or the Governor of a Territory.

If the air operator you intend to fly with is in the third category above, then check the list of air operators holding permission for the Territories.

If the air operator is not listed either above or on the list of foreign operators, then contact ASSI.

Complaints

If you have any complaints regarding aviation safety then please contact the Director of Civil Aviation for the Territory concerned.

If the relevant Director is not listed, or your complaint is of a more general nature, or you are not sure which Director to contact, then contact ASSI.
